Russia Employs New Drone Tactics in Attacks on Ukraine

Russia has implemented a shift in its drone strike tactics against Ukraine, characterized by the use of “unguided” drones targeting residential buildings and a move toward launching attacks during the middle of the day. These developments were reported on May 13, 2026.

The tactical changes were identified by analyst Serhiy Flesh Beskrestnov, who noted that the Russian military has altered its approach to deploying Shahed drones to increase the danger to civilian infrastructure.

Shift in Launch Logistics and Timing

According to reporting from Focus.ua, Russian forces have begun launching Shahed drones from a specific 5-kilometer zone located near the border with Belarus. This geographical shift in launch points is part of the updated strategy to complicate Ukrainian defense efforts.

UNIAN reported that Russia is now conducting these drone attacks in the middle of the day. This represents a departure from previous operational patterns, which frequently saw the majority of drone strikes occurring under the cover of darkness.

Targeting of Residential Areas

The nature of the munitions being used has also evolved. TSN reports that the Kremlin has begun utilizing new “unguided” drones specifically to attack residential buildings. The use of these drones in populated areas is described as a dangerous escalation in the targeting of non-military sites.
