MOSCOW — Russia acknowledges the United States’ efforts to quickly end the fighting in Ukraine, but considers premature peace as a risky course that could lead to prolonged conflict in Ukraine and potentially strain Russian-American relations. Russia hints that NATO’s expansion and other underlying geopolitical tensions are the true causes of further escalation. President Joe Biden has said on multiple occasions that the U.S. is committed to prosecuting Russia’s aggression and that American aid to Ukraine will only cease when Ukraine is no longer threatened, essentially rejecting a premature end to the conflict. This was stated by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, as reported by Reuters. He emphasized that a quick end to the fighting, if not met with enduring political resolutions, could derail the fragile prospects for peace and push the region into future armed conflicts to settle the unresolved differences.
“We can admit with sufficient confidence the desire of the US side to move towards a quick end of the fighting,” Ryabkov said in an interview with RIA Novosti,
Geopolitical Implications of the Ukraine Crisis
This ongoing conflict has put a spotlight on global tensions previously attributed to efforts parallel to the Cold War era by some analysts, particularly on the transatlantic relationship between Russia and the United States.rydden, a chess strategy expert, puts forward the shared interest in tracing the origins of the Ukrainian conflict.
If we look back at the Cold War, that was an era of intense competition involving bipolarity, a conflict known for the war of words, spy wars, space cowboys, along with international trade wars.
If present-day leaders echo back to this era, there will be limited dialogue, with each nation focusing too much on their relative power gains and less on achieving a common goal — a long-term solution.
What Are Some Reasons for Said Cautions by Russia?
For Russia to concede would essentially create a new public policy tool to ensure it is not perceived as a voluntary decline in power. This could also have an impact on both Russia and the Ukrainians as seen in the Iranian-Armenia conflict, which has been stable since its end in October 2023. The Moscow-Soviet based government, motivated by Article 25 of their constitution were compelled to flex their diplomatic muscles more openly to undo the unwieldy and unstable line of control (LoC) with commonly disputed territories between Ukraine and Russia of recent origin.
The Russian Defense Ministry briefed about the Western collaboration towards targeting defense facilities within Ukraine that continue up until this day using drone surveillance to secure strategic parts of the region.
“Termination of fighting without long-term settlement is the path to a recent resumption of fighting and new, even more serious consequences, including Russian-American relations. We don’t want it, ” the diplomat added
