Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukraine faced a brutal night of relentless Russian aggression as forces launched a widespread drone and missile attack, with a important focus on the country’s western regions. The assault, confirmed by Ukraine’s military aeronautics and the capital’s military administration, sent shockwaves across multiple oblasts, prompting NATO allies to scramble combat aircraft in a show of solidarity and readiness.
Widespread Attacks Across Ukraine
Explosions reverberated through numerous regions, including the capital Kyiv, kropyvnytskyi, Kherson, and Mykolaiv. A heavy concentration of drones was reported in the Kyiv, Chernihiv, Cherkasy, and Vinnytsia regions, and also in Zhytomyr to the east, Sumy to the west, and Odesa to the north. The eastern city of Kharkiv reported one civilian injured.
NATO Response: Combat Jets Scrambled
In response to the escalating Russian aerial activity,Poland and its allied nations took the significant step of scrambling combat aircraft overnight. The operational command of the Polish armed forces announced on X that due to the activity of Russian long-haul aviation targeting objectives, notably in western Ukraine, Polish and allied air forces initiated operations within Polish airspace.
“Due to the activity of Russian long-haul aviation, which is affecting objectives located, in particular, in western Ukraine, the Polish and allied air forces have started to operate in the Polish airspace,” a press release stated. Air defense systems and radar reconnaissance units were placed on maximum alert. The measures were implemented to ensure safety in areas bordering the threatened territories, with forces and vehicles remaining on high alert for an immediate response.
Western Ukraine Bears the Brunt of the Assault
The massive night-time barrage of missiles and drones launched by Russian forces primarily targeted the western part of Ukraine,according to reports from the Air Force,various mayors,and heads of local military administrations.
The city of Lviv, situated approximately 70 kilometers from the Polish border, was subjected to a large-scale attack that inflicted considerable damage. Mayor Andriy Sadovyi reported that the roof of a non-residential building in the Zaliznychny district caught fire, and a residential building on myropolite Andria street sustained damage. Maksym Kozytskyi, head of the military administration, confirmed that a two-story building was damaged, adding that preliminary reports indicated no fatalities or injuries.
Further west, in the Volyn region, which borders Lviv Oblast to the south, an air alarm was declared at 2:21 AM. in the city of Lutsk, located about 150 kilometers from Lviv, a residential building was reportedly destroyed as an inevitable result of the extensive attack.The coordinated and widespread nature of this latest Russian offensive underscores the ongoing intensity of the conflict and the strategic importance of western Ukraine in the broader geopolitical landscape.
