Russia Launches Massive Drone & Missile Attack on Ukraine: 420 Drones, 39 Missiles Used
Kyiv, Ukraine – Russia launched a massive aerial assault on Ukraine overnight, employing 420 drones and 39 missiles targeting energy infrastructure and residential areas across the country. The attacks, which occurred hours before scheduled talks between Ukrainian and US officials, have resulted in dozens of injuries and widespread damage, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The barrage, reported to have begun late Wednesday and continuing into Thursday, , focused on critical infrastructure, including gas facilities in the Poltava region and electrical substations in the Kyiv and Dnipro regions. Residential buildings were also struck, with reports of significant damage in eight regions, including Kyiv, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kirovohrad, Vinnytsia and Chernihiv.
President Zelenskyy detailed the scale of the attack in a post on Telegram, stating that the majority of the drones were Shahed models. He emphasized that while Ukrainian air defenses intercepted a significant number of the incoming projectiles, some strikes were unavoidable. “Last night, Russia once again waged war on critical infrastructure and ordinary residential buildings,” Zelenskyy said. “Unfortunately, there were also hits. And In other words we must continue working even more actively.”
At least 26 people have been reported injured as a result of the attacks, including children. In Kharkiv, at least 14 individuals were wounded, including a seven-year-old boy, according to Governor Oleh Syniehubov. The city was reportedly hit by two missiles and 17 drones. In Zaporizhzhia, at least seven people were injured, and Russian drones damaged 19 apartment buildings, leaving approximately 500 homes without heating due to infrastructure damage.
Authorities in Kyiv reported damage to buildings in three districts of the capital city caused by falling debris from intercepted missiles and drones. The extent of the damage is still being assessed.
The attacks come as Ukraine continues to rely heavily on Western aid, particularly air defense systems, to counter Russia’s ongoing military campaign. Zelenskyy specifically noted that the success of Ukrainian air defenses in intercepting many of the missiles was due to the timely delivery of missiles from partner nations, as agreed upon during the recent Ramstein meeting. He stressed the continued need for air defense missiles, stating, “The cold has not yet fully receded, and air defense missiles are needed every single day while Russia continues its attempts to destroy our energy system.”
Russia has increasingly focused its attacks on Ukraine’s energy sector in recent months, systematically targeting power plants and substations. These attacks have led to prolonged power outages across the country, impacting civilian life and industrial operations. The deliberate targeting of energy infrastructure is widely seen as an attempt to weaken Ukraine’s ability to sustain its war effort and to demoralize the population as winter approaches.
The timing of the attacks, coinciding with preparations for talks between Ukrainian and US officials, raises questions about Russia’s intentions. While the purpose of the talks has not been publicly disclosed, they are expected to address ongoing security assistance and potential future aid packages. The escalation in attacks could be interpreted as an attempt by Russia to exert pressure on Ukraine and its allies, or to demonstrate its continued military capabilities.
The international community has largely condemned Russia’s actions, with many countries reiterating their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. However, the ongoing conflict continues to pose a significant challenge to regional stability and global security. The attacks underscore the urgent need for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, but prospects for such a resolution remain uncertain.
First responders continue to work in the affected regions, providing assistance to those injured and assessing the full extent of the damage. The Ukrainian government has launched investigations into the attacks and is working to restore essential services to affected areas. The long-term impact of the attacks on Ukraine’s infrastructure and economy remains to be seen.
