Russia Launches New “Oreshnik” Missile in Response to NATO Threats
Putin Confirms Launch of New Ballistic Missile Against Ukraine
Vladimir Putin announced that Russia fired a new type of medium-range ballistic missile at Ukraine. In a video address to the nation, he stated that the new “Oreshnik” missiles travel so fast that existing missile defense systems cannot intercept them.
Putin explained that Moscow’s actions respond to authorization given to Ukraine by the United States and the United Kingdom to use long-range missiles against targets in Russia. He warned that if Ukraine continues to strike Russian territory, he may direct the “Oreshnik” missiles at American and British military sites.
“The combat test of the ‘Oreshnik’ missile system is a response to the aggressive actions of NATO countries against Russia. Our future actions will depend on the United States and its allies,” Putin added.
Earlier, Ukraine claimed the missile was an intercontinental ballistic missile. However, this has not been confirmed. The launch occurred early in the morning from the Astrakhan region, near the Caspian Sea.
This week, the U.S. allowed Ukraine to use “ATACMS” missiles against Russian targets. Soon after, Ukraine began firing British “Storm Shadow” missiles into Russia.
Putin stated, “We believe we have the right to use our weapons against military facilities of those countries that allow their weapons to be used against our facilities. In case of escalation and aggressive actions, we will respond decisively and reciprocally. I recommend that the ruling elites of these countries seriously consider this.”
