Russia Launches Zircon Hypersonic Missiles at Kyiv and Odesa Amid Rising Tensions

According to regional reports from Il Messaggero and RaiNews, Russian overnight missile strikes hit Kyiv and Odesa, deploying advanced Zircon hypersonic missiles and contributing to a verified total of 11 deaths and 64 injuries over a 24-hour period. The escalation comes as Ukraine expands its cross-border operations against Russian energy infrastructure.

Ukrainian forces targeted energy and transport infrastructure deep inside Russia, causing disruptions at the Novorossijsk oil port, where crude oil exports were halted. Local authorities confirmed damage to a ship and nearby residential buildings, with four people injured. Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Kyiv utilized domestically produced Long Neptune cruise missiles in its latest wave of cross-border strikes.

International Diplomatic and Defense Responses

Defense ministers from the E5 group, including Italy, met in Berlin to discuss military assistance, though no new specific air defense commitments emerged from the talks. High Representative Kaja Kallas stated during the meeting that the European Union does not maintain its own air defense reserves, noting that individual member states hold those assets and must decide their own levels of support. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius declined to comment on potential deliveries of Taurus cruise missiles to Kyiv, in line with the decision of the Merz government.

Zelensky is scheduled to travel to Paris on Monday to meet with Emmanuel Macron. The leaders plan to visit the headquarters of a multinational force being organized by France and Germany. French officials report that this structure involves a coalition of 35 countries alongside Ukraine and is designed to deploy forces following any potential ceasefire agreement with Russia. Zelensky’s upcoming diplomatic tour also includes planned stops in Athens and Madrid, where discussions are expected to cover the Vertical Corridor initiative, a gas transport infrastructure project spanning the Balkans to supply natural gas imported from the United States via Greek ports.
