Russia Begins Withdrawal of Military Assets from Syria After Assad Regime Collapse
Damascus, syria – Satellite imagery released by Maxar Technologies reveals Russian forces are packing up their military equipment at their airbase in Syria. Among the assets prepared for transport aboard massive cargo planes is the sophisticated S-400 air defense system.
This development follows the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime, which was overthrown by rebel forces. Assad and his family have reportedly fled to Russia.
Images captured on Friday show at least two Antonov AN-124s, some of the world’s largest cargo aircraft, with their nose cones open, stationed at Khmeimim Air Base in latakia, Syria.
“Two heavy-lift An-124 aircraft are on the airfield—both with raised nose cones and ready to load equipment/cargo,” Maxar stated.
“Nearby, a Ka-52 attack helicopter is being disassembled and likely prepared for transport while elements of the S-400 air defense unit are also preparing to depart from their previous deployment location at the airbase,” Maxar added, as reported by Reuters on Saturday.
Maxar also noted that the Russian Navy base in Tartous, Russia’s only repair and replenishment hub in the Mediterranean, remains largely unchanged as their december 10th imagery, with two frigates still observed offshore.

Russian Withdrawal From Syria Marks End of an Era
Damascus, Syria – Images released by Maxar Technologies capturing Russian forces dismantling their base at Khmeimim Air Base in Latakia, Syria, suggest the beginning of a full withdrawal from the war-torn nation. The images, taken on Friday, show two Antonov AN-124 cargo planes, among the world’s largest, prepared to transport military equipment, including elements of the sophisticated S-400 air defense system.
This monumental shift comes following the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime, toppled by rebel forces. Reports indicate assad and his family have sought refuge in Russia.
Adding weight to the narrative of a strategic retreat,Channel 4 News journalists observed a Russian military convoy of over 150 vehicles traversing Syrian roadways. The organized nature of the movement suggests a pre-arranged agreement facilitating a peaceful withdrawal.
Despite the movement from Khmeimim, Maxar observed no significant changes at the Russian naval base in Tartous, suggesting it will remain operational for now.
The Russian Ministry of Defense has yet to issue an official statement addressing the developments.
Moscow has maintained a strong presence in Syria since the Cold War, recognizing its independence in 1944 and viewing it as a strategic ally in the Middle east. While kremlin officials have expressed concern for the security of its military bases and diplomatic mission in Syria amidst Assad’s fall, the scale of the withdrawal seen in the imagery might indicate a larger strategic recalibration in the region.
