Russian health authorities are investigating the death of a 28-year-old laboratory technician at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Shelekhov, near Irkutsk in Siberia, after she contracted an undiagnosed form of pneumonia following a reported accident involving biological samples.
Technician Dies After Plague Bacteria Tube Breaks
The technician, identified as Darya Shipilova, worked with dangerous pathogens at the research facility. According to local reporting, a test tube containing live Yersinia pestis
bacteria accidentally broke during laboratory work on September 25. Shipilova fell ill two days later and was admitted to the Shelekhov district hospital intensive care unit, where she died on the night of October 2.
Rospotrebnadzor, Russia’s federal service for consumer rights protection and human well-being, confirmed that an employee died after a diagnosis of pneumonia de etiologia desconhecida
or undetermined origin. The agency stated that the sanitary and epidemiological situation in the Irkutsk region remains stable and added that no operational incidents occurred at the institute during work with pathogenic microorganisms, noting that no other facility workers requested infectious disease care in the preceding ten days.

Authorities Place Nearly 200 Contacts Under Medical Observation
Contrasting official statements, regional independent outlet Liudi Baikala reported that nearly 200 individuals—specifically 189 contacts, according to Notícias R7 citing REN TV—were placed under medical observation in hospitals. Authorities also established quarantine protocols at a local maternity ward, and an aluminum factory near the laboratory instructed its workers to wear protective masks as a precaution.
Alexei Tsydenov, head of the neighboring Republic of Buryatia, stated that the technician possibly died of the plague, though he emphasized that no active outbreaks exist in Buryatia. Irkutsk Governor Igor Kobzev called for calm, announcing via Telegram that an extraordinary regional anti-epidemic commission meeting took place with Russia’s chief sanitary doctor regarding a suspected case of a particularly dangerous infection.
Expert Assessment Of Transmission Risks
Gennady Onishchenko, former head of Rospotrebnadzor, told the state news agency TASS that the infection in Irkutsk provavelmente não é peste, mas, mesmo se for confirmada, não haverá disseminação da doença
. Onishchenko pointed out that the arrival of cold weather in October typically halts the transmission vectors of fleas and rodents.

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pneumonic plague is one of three forms caused by Yersinia pestis
and can spread directly from person to person through respiratory droplets. Symptoms include fever, headache, weakness, and rapid pneumonia featuring shortness of breath, chest pain, and bloody sputum. The World Health Organization notes that while plague carries a high fatality rate, it responds effectively to standard antibiotic treatments when administered promptly.
Ongoing Monitoring In Siberia
Artem Fominikh, director of the Irkutsk aluminum plant, urged residents to disregard conflicting rumors and confirmed that all identified close contacts remain under medical supervision with negative laboratory test results and no active symptoms. Health monitors continue to track natural foci across the region, while officials maintain heightened surveillance across Shelekhov and Irkutsk to verify the source of exposure and prevent any further spread.
Todos os contatos próximos identificados estão sob acompanhamento médico. No momento, eles não apresentam sinais da doença, e os resultados de seus exames laboratoriais são negativos
