Russia’s Hypersonic Missile Test: A Message too the US?
Moscow - Russia’s recent test of it’s hypersonic Oreshnik missile in Ukraine was intended to send a strong message to the United States, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
In an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson, Lavrov stated that Moscow is prepared to use all means necessary to defend its national interests and hopes Washington understood the message conveyed by the Oreshnik test.
Carlson, who interviewed Russian president vladimir Putin earlier this year, returned to Moscow to speak with Lavrov after a failed attempt to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“We don’t want to escalate the situation,but as ATACMS and other long-range weapons are being used against Russian territory,we sent a signal,” Lavrov said,as reported by Russia today. “We hope the last one, a few weeks ago, the signal with the new weapons system called Oreshnik, was taken seriously.”
The hypersonic intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) struck a missile factory in the Ukrainian city of dnipro. videos circulating on social media showed a bright flash in the sky followed by a secondary explosion after the missile impacted deep underground. The targeted site has as been closed to media access.
Lavrov revealed that Russia had notified the US through nuclear de-escalation channels 30 minutes before launching the Oreshnik missile. “So they wouldn’t mistake it for something bigger and more dangerous,” he explained.
