Medvedev Warns of WWIII After Trump’s Putin ‘Playing With Fire’ Remark
Updated May 27, 2025
Dmitry Medvedev, the former Russian president, responded sharply to Donald Trump’s recent criticism of vladimir Putin, raising the specter of World War III. Trump, on his Truth Social platform, accused Putin of “playing with fire,” suggesting that Russia would have faced “really bad” consequences if not for him.
Medvedev, now deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, retorted on X, formerly Twitter, that the only “REALLY BAD thing” he could envision was WWIII. He added, “I hope Trump understands this!”
While not an explicit threat, Medvedev’s statement underscores Russia’s nuclear capabilities and its willingness to use them rhetorically amid escalating tensions with the West. As Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Medvedev has become known for increasingly hawkish commentary.
He frequently uses social media to criticize Western leaders and suggest that global conflict is a distinct possibility if Moscow’s demands are ignored. The exchange highlights ongoing tensions and the potential for further escalation in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Trump has repeatedly asserted that the war in ukraine would not have occurred had he remained president. He has also claimed he could swiftly resolve the conflict if returned to the White House. His recent remarks mark a rare instance of direct warning to Putin, whose relationship with Trump has faced scrutiny.
Trump is known for his bombastic rhetoric. In 2017, he told reporters that North Korea would face ”fire and fury like the world has never seen” if it made further threats to the U.S.
What’s next
The international community will be watching closely for any further statements from either side, as well as any actions that could further escalate tensions in Eastern Europe. The potential for miscalculation remains a important concern.
