Russia Shot Down Over 200 Ukrainian Drones

September 12, 2025 Ahmed Hassan World

Ukraine Launches Extensive Drone‌ Attack on Russian Territory

updated ‍September 12, 2024, at‌ 05:50 AM

ukraine conducted a large-scale drone ‌attack targeting multiple locations within Russia, including Moscow and St. Petersburg, overnight on May ‌15-16,2024. Reports from Agence France-Presse (AFP) and ⁢ The Kyiv Independent confirm the widespread nature of the assault.

the Russian⁣ Ministry of Defense stated its air defense systems intercepted and destroyed ⁣221 drones.Nine of thes were reportedly shot down over Moscow itself. This represents one of ⁢the highest numbers‍ of⁢ Ukrainian drones engaged and claimed destroyed by Russian forces as the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. While ⁤the exact targets within Russia remain undisclosed, the breadth of‌ the⁢ attack suggests a purposeful attempt‌ to stretch Russian air defenses.

This offensive action ⁢follows a significant Russian‍ attack on Kyiv approximately one week prior, on ⁢May 8, 2024, which targeted government buildings ⁣and other infrastructure. The reciprocal nature of these attacks highlights an escalating‌ cycle of retaliation between the two nations. ⁢the⁢ May 8th attack on Kyiv involved a barrage of missiles, demonstrating Russia’s continued willingness to strike civilian and governmental centers. Reuters reported extensive damage and casualties from that assault.

The ⁤increased frequency and scale of drone ⁣attacks by Ukraine indicate a shift in strategy, potentially aimed at demonstrating Ukraine’s ability to strike deep within Russian⁤ territory and exert pressure on the Kremlin. ‍ Experts suggest this tactic serves both a military and psychological ‍purpose, disrupting Russian logistics and signaling resilience despite ongoing conflict.⁢ The reliance on drones also reflects Ukraine’s need to ⁢offset limitations in conventional military capabilities.
