Russia Spy Network in Ukraine Targeted F-16 Fighter Jets
Ukraine Thwarts Russian Spy Ring Targeting F-16 Locations
Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) has dismantled a Russian spy ring operating across five Ukrainian regions, thwarting attempts to locate Western-supplied F-16 fighter jets, the agency announced.
The SBU’s counterintelligence unit neutralized the network, which was working for Russia’s military intelligence agency (GRU). The ring sought to gather intelligence on Ukrainian defense forces, including the locations of airfields believed to be potential bases for the F-16s.
“The enemy’s agents were tasked with identifying the positions of Ukrainian air defense systems and pinpointing the location of secret military airfields where F-16 fighter jets could be stationed,” the SBU stated. The operation led to the arrest of 12 Russian agents and their informants. Some of those apprehended were deserters from the Ukrainian army who had been recruited by Russian intelligence after abandoning their units.
The spy ring operated in a decentralized manner, with members communicating through a resident handler based in the Dnipropetrovsk region. This handler used forged documents, including fake volunteer and anti-corruption activist credentials, to conceal his identity.
agents were recruited from the Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Sumy, Mykolaiv, and Odesa regions. In addition to targeting F-16 locations, they also sought to identify companies manufacturing electronic warfare equipment used to counter Russian drones.
To gather intelligence, the agents leveraged personal connections, including contacts within the Ukrainian military serving in frontline regions.
“After receiving preliminary facts, the agents woudl travel to the area to conduct further reconnaissance near potential targets,” the SBU explained.
During raids, authorities seized mobile phones, flash drives, military documents, and forged identification papers.
This operation highlights the ongoing threat posed by russian intelligence activities within Ukraine, even as the country fights back against the ongoing invasion.
