Russia Strikes Back: 10 Villages Retaken in Fierce Counterattack on Ukraine’s Kursk Region
Russia Launches Counter-Offensive Against Ukraine in Kursk Region
Russia has launched a counter-offensive against Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region, recapturing up to 10 villages after last month’s attack.
On Thursday, September 12, 2024, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that its army had recaptured villages in the Kursk region, west of the country, from the Ukrainian army in 10 locations. This development comes about a month after the Ukrainian side sent troops across the border to attack inside Russian territory for the first time.
The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that its ”Northern Units” forces recaptured 10 villages near Snagost in two days. According to Anatoly Matvychuk, a Russian Ministry of Defense expert, the Russian military has recovered more than 100 square kilometers of territory.
Ukrainian President Responds to Counter-Offensive
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged the counter-attack, stating that it was in accordance with the plan set by the Ukrainian side.
Signs of a Hostile Campaign
Major General Apti Alauddinov, Commander of the Special Forces of the Chechen Republic, an autonomous territory in Russia, revealed that six Ukrainian military battalions had suffered heavy damage. This marks the first sign that Russia has begun a hostile campaign.
Ukrainian Soldiers Describe the Situation
Ukrainian soldiers fighting in the Kursk region told the BBC that a Russian counter-attack had begun in an area further west of Sudsha, where fighting was difficult. They reported that the situation was no longer in favor of the Ukrainian side.
Background of the Conflict
Ukraine launched its offensive on the Kursk region on August 6, aiming to draw Russia’s attention away from Ukraine’s eastern front. However, this plan does not seem to be working, as the Russians have continued to advance and capture villages in the eastern front area, moving closer to strategic cities important to the Ukrainian army.
Analysts Weigh In
Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) in the United States noted that the size, scope, and capabilities of the Russian counterattack remain unclear, making it too early to draw any conclusions.
