Moscow Reaffirms ‘One China’ Policy
Taiwan is an integral part of China, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who affirmed on December 24, 2023, that Russia opposes any form of Taiwanese independence. This statement, reported by the state-owned news agency TASS, strengthens concerns about a potential conflict in asia involving China, Taiwan, and the United States and its allies.
Lavrov characterized the Taiwan issue as an “internal affair” of China, asserting that Beijing has the sovereign right to defend its territorial integrity. This position aligns with China’s long-held stance on Taiwan, which it views as a renegade province that must eventually be reunified with the mainland, by force if necessary.
Critique of International Stance
The Russian Foreign Minister criticized what he described as a disconnect between stated adherence to the “One China” policy and actions that effectively maintain the status quo. He argued that this de facto support for the current situation represents a disagreement with China’s principle of national reunification. The “One China” policy, officially recognized by many countries including the United states, acknowledges the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government of china, while maintaining unofficial relations with Taiwan.
Lavrov’s comments suggest Russia views the ongoing tensions as stemming from external interference and a misrepresentation of facts. This perspective echoes similar narratives employed by China, which frequently accuses external actors, particularly the United States, of meddling in its internal affairs and supporting separatist movements.
