Table of Contents
The conflict in Ukraine is escalating, with Kyiv launching increasingly refined attacks targeting Russian energy and transport infrastructure. These strikes come amid growing international scrutiny over continued oil purchases from Russia, which critics argue are funding Moscow’s war effort.
International Pressure Over Russian Oil
Concerns are mounting over the financial support being provided to Russia through the continued purchase of its oil. As one observer stated, “buying Russian oil, they’re fuelling the war machine, and if they’re going to do that, I’m not going to be happy.” This sentiment reflects a broader call for increased pressure on Russia through economic sanctions and a reduction in its revenue streams. The debate highlights the complex geopolitical considerations surrounding energy security and the desire to limit Russia’s ability to sustain its military operations.
Ukraine’s Strikes
Meanwhile, Ukraine has stepped up its interdiction campaign against Russian energy and transport infrastructure, demonstrating a growing capacity to strike deeper within Russian territory.
UAV and Railway Disruptions
On July 31,Russia reported intercepting 32 Ukrainian long-range Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in its western border regions. The attack resulted in delays to rail services in the Volgograd region, indicating a purposeful attempt to disrupt logistical supply lines. Open-source intelligence analysis from Frontelligence Insight suggests Ukraine is specifically targeting railways connecting defense factories to the front lines.
Targeting Defence Production
Ukraine’s strikes are not limited to transport infrastructure.Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation, revealed an attack on a radio factory in Penza, Russia, which manufactures mobile command complexes and automated combat control systems. This highlights a strategic effort to degrade Russia’s military command and control capabilities.
Escalation of Attacks – weekend Strikes
The weekend saw a notable escalation in the scope and intensity of Ukrainian strikes. The Radio Plant in Penza was attacked a second time, alongside Electropribor, a manufacturer of encryptors, secure modems, and switches vital for military and intelligence agencies.
Further strikes targeted a storage and launch site for Shahed drones at the primorsko-Akhtarsk military airfield in Krasnodar. However, the most impactful attacks focused on Russian oil refineries.
Oil Refinery and Depot Strikes
Ukraine successfully attacked the Ryazan Oil Refinery, one of Russia’s four largest, responsible for over 6 percent of the country’s total refining capacity, causing a significant fire. The Novokuybyshevsk Oil Refinery near samara city was also hit, with footage showing explosions. Additionally, the Annanafteproduct oil depot in the Voronezh region was struck and set ablaze. On Sunday, a long-range Ukrainian strike hit an oil depot in Sochi on the Black Sea, further expanding the geographical reach of these attacks.
Gas Pipeline Disruption
Ukrainian media reported that explosions damaged a key Russian gas pipeline carrying gas from Turkmenistan to Russia, causing an indefinite shutdown. These outlets claim the pipeline supplied military industries, including the Demikhov Machine-Building Plant, the MiG aircraft company, and the Magnum-K ammunition plant, suggesting a deliberate attempt to disrupt the supply of resources to critical defence manufacturers.
