Ukraine Receives Remains of 1,200 Soldiers in War Dead Exchange
Ukrainian officials confirmed Sunday the role of Russia in handing over another 1,200 bodies of Ukrainian soldiers killed in action. This exchange of war dead is part of ongoing agreements between the two nations, which also include prisoner swaps.
This latest transfer brings the total number of repatriated bodies this month to over 4,800, marking one of the largest returns of war dead as Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. The prisoner exchange role is also a key part of the agreement.
Russian state news agencies TASS and RIA reported the handover, noting that Moscow has not received any Russian bodies in return.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, who led the Ukrainian delegation at talks in Istanbul earlier this month, stated that the repatriation of deceased soldiers continues as part of the Istanbul agreements. “Today, the Russian side handed over another 1,200 bodies to Ukraine,” Umerov said.
”This is a complex and delicate work that will give each family the opportunity to receive answers.”
This marks the fourth handover of soldiers’ remains in the past week, following an agreement reached between Russia and Ukraine during negotiations in Istanbul. The agreement stipulates that Kyiv and Moscow will each hand over up to 6,000 bodies and exchange sick, heavily wounded, and prisoners of war under 25 years old.
To date, Russia has reported receiving only 27 Russian servicemen in return. Ukraine and Russia have conducted three prisoner of war exchanges, but have not released specific numbers.
What’s next
The immediate focus for Ukrainian authorities is the identification of the recovered bodies, a process described by Umerov as “important and responsible.” This will provide families with closure and answers regarding their loved ones.
