Ukraine and Russia Conduct Ninth Prisoner Exchange Amidst Escalating Air Attacks
Kyiv, Ukraine – July 24, 2025 – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the prosperous completion of the ninth prisoner exchange with Russia, a critically important progress that has brought over 1,000 Ukrainian prisoners of war back home. The announcement came as both nations continued to engage in intense drone and missile attacks, highlighting the ongoing conflict despite diplomatic efforts.
“For a thousand families, this means the joy of embracing their loved ones again,” Zelenskyy stated in a social media post on Thursday, emphasizing that many of the returned prisoners had endured over three years of captivity. He underscored the importance of these ongoing exchanges, vowing to “continue doing everything possible to ensure that every one of our people returns from captivity.”
The prisoner swap, part of an agreement reached in istanbul, offers a glimmer of hope for families separated by the conflict. A handout image from the Ukrainian Presidential Press Service depicted Ukrainian prisoners of war upon their return, a poignant visual of the human cost of the war.
Drone and Missile Attacks Intensify Post-Istanbul Meeting
Despite the positive news of the prisoner exchange, the night following a brief meeting in Istanbul saw a significant escalation in air attacks. Russia launched a barrage of 103 attack drones and four missiles targeting Ukrainian territory, resulting in casualties.
President Zelenskyy reported that three people were killed in the Kharkiv region due to the Russian strikes. Additionally, more than 10 individuals, including a 9-year-old child, were wounded in Cherkasy. He pointed out the stark contrast between Ukraine’s reiteration of its “proposal for an immediate and full ceasefire” during the Istanbul meeting and Russia’s subsequent actions.
“In response, Russian drones struck residential buildings and the Pryvoz market in Odesa, apartment blocks in Cherkasy, energy infrastructure in the Kharkiv region, a university gym in Zaporizhzhia,” zelenskyy detailed, expressing a commitment to diplomatic solutions while placing the onus on Russia to end the war. ”We will make every effort to ensure that diplomacy works. But it is Russia that must end this war.”
The retaliatory attacks were not confined to Ukraine. In Russia’s Krasnodar region, emergency officials reported that debris from a falling drone struck and killed a woman in the Adler district, near the resort city of Sochi. A second woman sustained serious injuries in the incident, according to Reuters.
The ongoing cycle of prisoner exchanges and aerial bombardments underscores the complex and volatile nature of the conflict, with diplomatic overtures met by continued military aggression.
