Ukraine Strikes Send a Signal to Russia and Allies
Despite recent Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian airfields that have diminished the Russian Air Force’s capabilities, Russia retains the ability to strike Ukraine from its own territory, according to Carlo Masala, a professor of international politics at the Bundeswehr University Munich.
Masala said Russia can continue attacks using glide bombs, cruise missiles, and rockets launched from Russian airspace. He noted the significance of the strikes originating from within Russia, indicating extensive planning.
“It is indeed a spectacular operation, considering that, according to Ukraine,it had been prepared for 15 to 18 months,[and that] it took place in Russia,” Masala said. “So, no long-range drones were involved.”
Masala emphasized the symbolic importance of these strikes, particularly for Ukraine’s allies. The strikes serve as a demonstration of Ukraine’s capabilities to both Russia and the West.
“It is a signal to Russia about what they are capable of. it is indeed a signal to the West about what they are capable of,” Masala said.
he added that these actions demonstrate Ukraine’s resilience and unexpected capabilities, providing an important signal to countries supporting Ukraine.
Ukraine estimates the damage inflicted at approximately $7 billion, claiming that about 34% of Russia’s strategic cruise missile carriers were affected by the attacks.
