Updated May 29,2025
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has affirmed that Europe will defend its values of freedom and democracy, responding to repeated criticisms from the Trump administration, especially from Vice President J. D. Vance. Merz spoke at an event honoring European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Merz reiterated the EU’s desire to avoid escalating tariff disputes with the United States, emphasizing that such actions would harm both economies. His remarks also addressed Vance’s February speech in Munich, where the U.S. vice president claimed Europe faces an “internal threat” and a decline in free speech.
The German leader’s statement followed the U.S. State Department’s proclamation of visa restrictions on foreign nationals who “censor” Americans, potentially affecting european officials enforcing regulations on U.S. tech companies.
“In his way, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance forced us at the beginning of the year to ask ourselves this question: What do we Europeans stand for together?” said friedrich Merz. “Ladies and gentlemen,we have the strongest and best answer imaginable. In Europe, we defend what we have conceived, developed, obtained and defended together over the centuries, despite countless setbacks and disasters: the conviction that freedom and democracy are worth defending with determination and, if necessary, fighting to protect.”
Merz, who has pledged to build the most powerful army in Europe, assured that Germany would contribute to strengthening the EU. He also noted a “new spirit of unity” on the continent, citing support for Ukraine and renewed trade and defense ties with the United Kingdom.
Eastern Ukraine
Amid these political statements, the Russian army claimed Thursday to have seized three villages in eastern Ukraine: Stroivka in the Kharkiv region, and Hnativka and Chevtchenko Perche in the Donetsk region. This announcement comes as moscow proposed new talks with Kyiv in Istanbul next week.
