Efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine are entering a new phase, with discussions underway for a potential trilateral meeting involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and former U.S. President Donald Trump. While the White House is facilitating these talks, the Kremlin has expressed reservations.
Zelenskyy Welcomes Negotiations, Trump proposes Meeting Location
President Zelenskyy has characterized the White House negotiations as a “big step forward” in the pursuit of peace. Trump has suggested Budapest as a possible location for the trilateral meeting, with Istanbul and Switzerland also under consideration. Trump has indicated a willingness to step aside if direct talks between Zelenskyy and Putin are preferred, stating, “Now I think it would be better if they meet without me… if necessary, I will go.”
International Support and Security Guarantees
Allies of Ukraine convened a coalition meeting to discuss further sanctions against Russia and to formulate security guarantees for Kyiv. NATO is scheduled to hold a meeting, with key officials participating virtually. Despite these diplomatic efforts,Russia continues to insist on conditions, including the non-presence of NATO forces in Ukraine and maintaining control over disputed territories. Analysts suggest Moscow may prolong negotiations while together continuing military operations.
Putin’s Hesitation and Limited Engagement
President Putin has not yet agreed to a direct meeting with President Zelenskyy, despite encouragement from Trump. The Kremlin has indicated that discussions are currently limited to exploring the possibility of increasing the level of representative engagement, rather then a head-of-state summit. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized the need for careful readiness before any high-level meetings can take place.
Trump Pledges No Ground Troops,Considers Air Support
Former President Trump has affirmed that he would not deploy U.S. ground troops to Ukraine. However, he has expressed openness to providing air support as part of a potential peace agreement. He highlighted europe’s willingness to contribute ground forces and suggested the U.S. could offer assistance “especially, maybe… by air.” Trump emphasized his reliance on “instincts” in negotiations, while acknowledging the possibility that Putin may not be receptive to a peace deal.
White House Confirmation and Ongoing Attacks
The White House has confirmed that air support is being considered as an option, reiterating that U.S. troops will not be deployed to Ukraine. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated the U.S. could offer coordination and other security guarantees to European allies. These developments occur amidst a recent escalation in attacks, with Russia launching one of it’s largest air strikes in over a month, utilizing 270 drones and 10 missiles against various Ukrainian regions.
Trump’s Personal Stake in peace
In a controversial statement, Trump suggested that brokering a peace agreement in Ukraine could improve his prospects of entering heaven, stating, “I want to try to go to heaven if possible… if I could enter heaven, this would be one of the reasons.” He previously expressed a desire to win the Nobel Peace Prize through his efforts to end the conflict, but now frames his motivation as extending beyond political ambition.
