South Korea to Deliver KF-21 ⁢Boramae Block I Fighters to Philippine Air Force

The KF-21 Boramae is a 4.5 generation multirole fighter ⁢aircraft developed by⁤ the Republic of Korea‍ to ⁤replace older models such as the F-4 Phantom II and KF-5E/F in the‍ Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF). The KF-21 development project aims to enhance the country’s domestic fighter production capacity and reduce its dependence on ⁣foreign suppliers for military technology.

Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI)⁢ has revealed that it will export 12 FA-50 Block 20 Fighting Eagle light fighters and will likely⁤ provide KF-21 Boramae Block I fighters to the ⁢Philippine Air Force⁤ (PAF) to enhance the⁤ force’s air combat capabilities.

The design of the KF-21 emphasizes the features‍ of‌ reducing the radar cross section (RCS)⁤ and complete stealth capabilities in ‌the future. The aircraft has a delta wing configuration⁢ with flaps, providing high agility and maneuverability. In later variants, the ‍weapons bay‍ is located internally and the aircraft⁢ uses composite materials, reducing weight and optimizing the performance of the vehicle.

One⁣ of the standout features of the KF-21 is its glass cockpit with⁤ large‌ displays and a comprehensive suite of avionics. The aircraft uses a digital Fly-By-Wire ⁤(FBW) control system and safety features such as an automatic terrain tracking and ground collision avoidance system. The KF-21 also uses‌ radar absorbent materials (RAM) and structures (RAS) ⁣to reduce radar visibility.

Powered by an ‍F414-GE-400 engine, the KF-21 has a maximum speed of‍ Mach 1.8 and a combat ‌radius of ‌about 1,800km.⁢ The aircraft‍ is ‌equipped with an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar that allows it to track and attack multiple targets simultaneously.

The KF-21 can carry a variety of air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons, including the AIM-9X Sidewinder, AIM-120 AMRAAM, Meteor and IRIS-T⁢ missiles. The ⁢aircraft ⁣can carry guided bombs, anti-ship missiles and a variety of indigenous ammunition. In addition, the⁣ KF-21 is equipped with the M61A2 Vulcan cannon for⁤ close combat.

The KF-21 has several variants, including Block I, ⁣Block ‌II, and Block III, as⁢ well‌ as potential variants such as the KF-21N (carrier-based version), KF-21EA (electronic ⁢warfare variant), and KF-21SA (export version). Block I focuses ‍on ‍basic air-to-air capabilities, Block ⁢II‌ aims to‍ enhance‌ air-to-ground missions and enhance sensor systems, and Block III (KF-21EX) is planned to ⁣incorporate more advanced stealth features and integration with unmanned systems.

KAI also pointed out that the upgrades to the KF-21 Block II,‌ which will expand its air-to-ground capabilities, are expected to be‌ available by‌ 2028. While the initial configuration of the KF-21 Block I is likely to have limited capabilities, the purchase of the aircraft could help the PAF gain operational experience with the ‌fighter and rapidly enhance its⁢ air defense capabilities.
