moscow, Russia – Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, a senior Russian military official responsible for nuclear protection forces, was killed Tuesday in⁢ a bombing outside an apartment building in Moscow.

The blast, caused by an explosive device hidden in an electric scooter, also claimed the life of Kirillov’s assistant. The incident ‍occurred on Ryazansky Prospekt, a bustling street in the ⁣Russian capital.

Russia’s investigative committee confirmed the deaths and announced the opening of a criminal case. ⁤

“Igor Kirillov, the head of the radiation, chemical and biological protection forces of the armed forces of the Russian Federation, and⁣ his assistant were killed,” the committee stated.

Al Jazeera’s Maria Shapovalova, reporting from Moscow, noted that residents of the building where⁢ the explosion took place had long complained about the lack of⁤ security cameras in the area.

“Residents … have been⁢ complaining for‍ years about the lack of normal video surveillance. The cameras were not recording what was happening …on ⁤those block ⁢of flats,” Shapovalova said.

Graphic images circulating on Russian Telegram channels ⁤showed the aftermath of the blast: a shattered building entrance, debris ‍scattered across the snow, and two bodies lying in the blood-stained snow.According to Russian news agency Tass,⁣ a law enforcement official reported that the explosive device contained approximately ‍300 grams of TNT equivalent.

Kirillov headed Russia’s Troops of Radiological,Chemical⁤ and Biological Defense,a specialized unit trained to operate in environments contaminated by⁢ radioactive, chemical,or biological agents.

The⁤ bombing comes just days after Ukrainian prosecutors charged Kirillov in absentia with the alleged use of banned chemical weapons in Ukraine. The security Service of Ukraine (SBU) made the announcement, citing evidence gathered ‍during their inquiry.Russia vehemently denies these accusations.

In ⁤October,⁢ the United Kingdom imposed sanctions on Kirillov ⁢and the nuclear protection forces for alleged use of riot control agents and the ⁢toxic chemical chloropicrin on ‍the battlefield.

Chloropicrin, a ⁣choking agent with a pungent odor, was widely⁤ used as a tear gas during ⁢World War I. Its use is strictly prohibited by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

While Russia maintains it no ‍longer⁤ possesses a military chemical arsenal, the country faces mounting pressure for greater openness regarding the alleged use of ⁤toxic weapons in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. The SBU claims to⁤ have documented over 4,800 instances of⁤ chemical weapon use on the battlefield since February 2022, primarily involving K-1 combat grenades.
