An attempt was made on the life of Major-General Azatbek Omurbekov, a Russian military officer accused of war crimes during the occupation of Bucha, Ukraine, in 2022. The incident occurred on April 28th in the Khabarovsk region of Russia, with a bomb reportedly placed in a mailbox at his military garrison in the village of Knyaz-Volkonskoe-1.
While the condition of Omurbekov, 42, remains unknown, reports indicate that one person, Lieutenant Colonel Kuzmenko, commander of the training communications battalion, was killed in the explosion and several others were injured. Approximately 20 people, including eight children, were evacuated from the area, according to statements released by authorities.
Allegations of Atrocities in Bucha
Omurbekov commanded troops during the Russian occupation of Bucha and Andriyivka in 2022. He has been declared wanted by Ukraine for his alleged role in atrocities committed against civilians in Bucha, where Russian soldiers are accused of torturing and killing local residents. The accusations include mass rapes and murders during the initial stages of the invasion.

The Russian authorities have classified the explosion as a secret and imposed an information blackout, according to VChK-OGPU, a Telegram channel with reported links to Russian security services. This secrecy has hindered the flow of information regarding the incident and the extent of the damage.
Omurbekov’s Recent Role
Prior to the attempted bombing, Omurbekov served as the head of the 392nd District Training Centre for Junior Specialists of the Eastern Military District, a position he has held since 2023. Before that, in 2022, he led the 64th Separate Motor Rifle Brigade, which was stationed in Bucha during the occupation.
The attempted assassination highlights the ongoing tensions and repercussions stemming from the conflict in Ukraine, and the pursuit of accountability for alleged war crimes. The incident also underscores the vulnerability of Russian military officials, even within Russian territory.
