Russian Navy Commander Gudkov Killed in Kursk Region

Mikhail Gudkov, the deputy ⁣head of the Russian ⁣navy, died in the Kursk region, the Ministry of Defence confirmed Thursday. Gudkov, 42, ⁤is ⁢among the highest-ranking russian officers ⁤killed ‌since the invasion of Ukraine began more ‍than three years ago. The ministry, quoted by​ RIA news agency, stated Gudkov⁤ died Wednesday “during combat operations”⁣ in the border region. The death of this Russian navy commander highlights the⁤ ongoing tensions in the region.

While the ‌ministry reported Gudkov’s death occurred during combat operations, unofficial sources on telegram ‌suggested a Ukrainian missile strike on a command post in Kursk may have been the cause. Ukrainian forces ⁣briefly⁣ seized parts of the Kursk region in August 2024. Despite Moscow’s claim of ​full recovery in April, clashes have persisted.

Oleg Kozhemyako, governor of Primorye, where Russia’s pacific Fleet is based, said gudkov died “carrying out his duty as​ an officer.” Kozhemyako added that Gudkov ‌previously led⁢ the fleet’s⁤ 155th Guards Naval Infantry Brigade until earlier this year.”When he became deputy chief of the navy, he did not stop⁣ personally visiting the positions of ⁢our⁢ marines,” Kozhemyako said⁢ on telegram.
