Russian General Killed in Moscow Bombing, Ukraine Claims Obligation
Moscow, Russia – A senior Russian general responsible for the country’s nuclear defense forces was killed Tuesday in a bombing in Moscow, according to Russian authorities. Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, head of the Russian Armed Forces’ Radiation, chemical, adn Biological Defense Troops, died when a bomb hidden in an electric scooter detonated outside his apartment building on Ryazansky prospekt.”Igor Kirillov, head of the radiation, chemical, and biological defense troops of the Russian Armed Forces, and his assistant were killed,” the Russian Investigative Committee said in a statement.
The blast, which occurred around 7:30 a.m. local time,sent shockwaves through the Russian capital.
Russian state news agency TASS, citing a law enforcement official, reported that the explosive device contained approximately 300 grams of TNT equivalent.
A source within Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) told Al Jazeera that the agency was responsible for the attack.
“We claim responsibility for the bombing of the head of the Russian Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Defense Troops, Igor Kirillov,” the source said.
Reuters and AFP also cited SBU sources, who described Kirillov as a “legitimate target.”
Ukraine has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
Graphic images circulating on Russian Telegram channels showed a mangled entrance to the building, debris scattered across the ground, and two bodies lying in the snow-covered street. A criminal investigation has been launched.
The Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Defense Troops are a specialized unit within the Russian military trained to operate in environments contaminated by radioactive, chemical, or biological agents.
