President Tamás Sulyok initially expressed deep compassion for those injured in a recent rocket strike on the Transcarpathian city of Munkács, wishing them a swift and complete recovery.Tho,the President subsequently amended his initial statement,removing the word “Russian” from the sentence describing the attack. This change has sparked questions and scrutiny.
The HVG news outlet contacted the President’s office seeking clarification on the reason for the edit and to ascertain who, according to the head of state, was responsible for the attack. Questions were also directed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Péter Szijjártó. The initial post also included a statement expressing hope for a swift end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict through international diplomatic efforts.
Following the incident in Munkács, Russian expert András Rácz commented that the event signaled the end of the illusion that the war would not impact the region.
Munkács, situated in the picturesque Subcarpathian Ruthenia, has a rich history and a critically important Jewish community. It was a centre of Jewish life in the bereg district in the 18th and 19th centuries.
