Russian forces launched a massive wave of drone and missile attacks across Ukraine on April 16, 2026, resulting in multiple deaths and widespread damage to civilian infrastructure. Local officials described the bombardment as one of the deadliest in recent months.

Reports on the total number of fatalities vary between sources. Al Jazeera reported that at least 16 people were killed, while one BBC report stated at least 17 people died across three cities. However, a separate BBC report indicated that at least 19 people were killed in the capital city of Kyiv alone, including four children.

Casualties and Damage in Ukrainian Cities

In the southern port city of Odesa, the head of the city’s military administration, Serhiy Lysak, reported that the strikes killed nine people and wounded 23 others.

In the central city of Dnipro, regional head Oleksandr Ganzha stated that four people were killed and dozens more were injured, with images showing several buildings on fire.

In Kyiv, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine and Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko reported at least four deaths, including a 12-year-old boy. Klitschko stated that between 45 and 48 people were injured in the capital. Rescuers reported pulling a mother and child from the ruins of a 16-storey residential building that collapsed in the city’s central Podilsky district. In the north of the city, four emergency medical workers were among the injured.

The strikes in Kyiv also damaged office spaces used by the British Council and the European Union delegation, although no deaths were reported at those specific locations.

Military Scale and Air Defense

The Ukrainian air force provided data on the scale of the assault over a 24-hour period, stating that Russia launched 659 drones and 44 missiles. Ukrainian air defense units reported downing 636 of the drones and 31 of the missiles.

The attacks occurred following the end of a 32-hour Orthodox Easter truce. Both Russia and Ukraine accused each other of committing hundreds of violations during that ceasefire period.

International Reactions and Diplomacy

The United Kingdom government summoned the Russian ambassador to express its condemnation of the strikes. The UK Foreign Office urged Russia to stop this senseless killing, asserting that further attacks would strengthen the resolve of the UK and Europe to support Ukraine.

The European Union’s top diplomat stated that Moscow’s actions were mocking peace efforts. Ursula von der Leyen contacted President Volodymyr Zelensky via phone to convey her solidarity.

On April 17, 2026, Ukraine’s security council chief Rustem Umerov and other officials are scheduled to meet with US special envoy Steve Witkoff in New York. The meeting will focus on the economic, political, and military components of security guarantees for Ukraine.

Reports from Russia

Moscow reported that a Ukrainian drone attack in the Krasnodar Krai region killed two people, including a child.
