The French trio Karénine features Tchaikovsky’s Op. 50 as the central work on their fifth CD, surprisingly combining the expansive piece with two individual movements. An arrangement of the “Andante appassionato” from Tchaikovsky’s second piano concerto concludes the CD – as a kind of devoted encore. The new album also begins with a slow movement, the Adagio from Rimsky-Korsakov’s C minor trio. The unusual dramaturgy reveals inner, sonic connections that are immediately palpable when listening. The Karénine Trio was founded in 2009, but the current line-up is relatively new, as violinist Julien dieudegard only joined in 2023. He makes the ensemble a world-class trio.
The second current recording in this broadcast brings together all 20 songs by Frederic Chopin. Partly not intended for the concert stage, but only for private use, they are intimate, incredibly diverse miniatures, sometimes strongly rooted in folk music, then again experimental and innovative. The Czech-Swiss soprano Martina Janková not only has an international career in concert and music theater, she also teaches at the Zurich University of the Arts and is currently writing her dissertation on the topic of ”The song as an identity-forming phenomenon”. janková interprets flawlessly and with a captivating timbre, never “playing it safe”,always with maximum expression. Pianist Ivo Kahánek is a reliable partner at the piano.
