Weekend Coup Attempt Tests Tiani Regime

Niger’s military government faced a coup attempt over the weekend that was contained by Russia’s Africa Corps, raising fresh questions about Moscow’s security footprint in West Africa.

Yet the force has not yet resolved ongoing attacks from extremist militant groups.

Direct Kremlin Control Replaces Wagner Model

Unlike the Wagner Group, whose private status offered the Kremlin a degree of plausible deniability, Africa Corps operates as a direct instrument of the Russian Ministry of Defence.

“The whole point of Africa Corps is that it brings the power back under the control of the Russian Ministry of Defence,” analyst Boswall told the BBC.

While deployed officially to combat Islamist militant networks, the presence of Russian troops alters the calculations for any regional dissidents contemplating action against military regimes. Despite ongoing struggles against jihadist insurgencies across the Sahel, analysts anticipate that Africa Corps will maintain its footprint to protect Moscow’s strategic investments.

Uranium and Gold Fuel Transactional Alliance

“Wagner – and now Africa Corps – have always had a very transactional interest in Africa,” Boswall said, noting that operations in Mali target gold while activities in Niger focus heavily on uranium.

Diplomatic Leverage and Sovereignty Rhetoric

Beyond resource extraction, analysts indicate that Moscow secures vital diplomatic backing from friendly military governments in international forums. Tiani’s administration, mirroring Mali and Burkina Faso, has heavily emphasized sovereignty, pan-Africanism, and liberation from former colonial powers to build domestic legitimacy.

These three Sahel nations previously ordered French troops to depart and formed the Alliance of Sahel States after withdrawing from the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas). However, some observers note a contradiction between asserting regional independence and growing increasingly dependent on Russian military forces.

Redefining Partnerships Across the Sahel

“The military governments argue that they have selected Russia on their own terms,” analyst Ochieng told the BBC, adding that Moscow is viewed as a partner that respects national sovereignty unlike previous arrangements with France, the European Union, or the United States.
