Russia’s Eastern Offensive: Hypersonic Missile Strikes Escalate Ukraine Conflict
Russian Advances and Escalating Conflict in Ukraine
Kyiv reported that Russian forces are advancing on the eastern front by nearly 1,000 feet each day. This comes after President Vladimir Putin launched a new hypersonic missile at Ukraine, prompting increased tensions and fears of further attacks.
The Ukrainian Parliament halted its sessions due to the threat of missile strikes, following a recent attack on Dnipro, where a nuclear-capable missile was deployed. This incident represented a significant escalation in Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, leading to a decline in the Russian ruble against the U.S. dollar, reaching its lowest point since March 2022.
A military source noted that Russian troops are advancing by 200-300 meters daily near Kurakhove in the Donetsk region. The situation there is reportedly worsening compared to areas like Pokrovsk, critical to both sides.
In his latest address, Putin warned the West, stating that Russia might retaliate against nations supporting Ukraine. This response follows U.S. and U.K. decisions allowing Ukraine to strike Russian territory.
A meeting is set for NATO and Ukrainian officials in Brussels to discuss these developments. In Kyiv, where government buildings are typically secure, many lawmakers opted to work remotely due to increased missile threat alerts.
Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov stated that their advances had weakened Ukrainian forces significantly. He claimed Russia had disrupted Ukraine’s military plans for the future.
Putin claimed that the war now reflects broader global tensions and confirmed the use of a new ballistic missile named Oreshnik during the attack on Dnipro. This strike aimed at an aerospace manufacturing plant and drew condemnation from Ukraine’s allies.
Residents of Dnipro expressed shock and concern over the attacks. One local worker noted, “Anything can happen,” highlighting the unpredictability of the situation.
Supporters in Moscow remain confident in a Russian victory, while some express worries about potential nuclear conflict. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz labeled Russia’s missile deployment a “terrible escalation.”
The recent tensions follow Ukraine’s recent attacks on Russian territory, reportedly enabled by Western military support. Russian strikes also resulted in casualties in eastern Ukraine, adding to the conflict’s toll.
