Russia’s Revised Nuclear Doctrine: A Warning to the US Amid Ongoing Ukraine Conflict
Moscow – President Vladimir Putin approved an updated nuclear doctrine for Russia. This revised doctrine states that Russia may consider using its nuclear weapons if it faces a conventional missile attack supported by a nuclear-armed state.
Putin’s approval of this nuclear doctrine serves as a warning to the United States (US), which has provided Ukraine with weapons during the ongoing conflict that began in 2022.
The official approval of the updated nuclear doctrine, as reported by Reuters on November 19, 2024, responds to President Joe Biden‘s administration allowing Ukraine to launch long-range missiles supplied by the US to strike deep into Russian territory.
The revised nuclear doctrine outlines threats that could lead Russia’s leaders to consider a nuclear response. It indicates that attacks using conventional missiles, drones, or fighter jets may meet these criteria.
Additionally, the doctrine states that any aggression against Russia by a member of a coalition will be seen as aggression by the entire coalition. This likely refers to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Weeks before the US presidential election, Putin ordered the changes to reaffirm that any conventional attack on Russia, aided by a nuclear power, could be viewed as a collective attack on Moscow.
