Rutgers Reloads: 25th Season Brings Fresh Talent After Harper and Bailey’s Stellar Show
Rutgers University Embarks on Exciting Journey in 2023-2024 College Basketball Season
As the 2023-2024 college basketball season begins, Rutgers University is embarking on an innovative and exciting journey under the direction of Head Coach Steve Pikiell. In just one year, Pikiell has successfully revamped a program that had a tough record last season.
Despite losing four key players to the transfer portal and a disappointing finish, this transformation has propelled the Scarlet Knights into the prestigious AP Top 25 rankings, currently sitting at No. 25. The foundation of this rebirth lies in what has been dubbed the best recruiting class in Rutgers history.
Notable Freshmen and Returning Players
Notable freshmen include guard Dylan Harper and versatile guard/forward Ace Bailey, both of whom are highly regarded high school talents and are also on the radar in the upcoming NBA Draft. The team returns key players who bring stability and experience, including big man Emmanuel Omoruyi and dynamic guards Jeremiah Williams and Jamechael Davis.
Dylan Harper is the son of former NBA star Ron Harper and the older brother of former Scarlet Knights Ron Harper Jr. He showed his scoring ability last season at Don Bosco Prep, averaging 23 points. Meanwhile, 6-foot-10 Ace Bailey thrived in Georgia, averaging 33.4 points, 15.5 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 2.9 blocks at McEachen High School.
Williams, a 6-foot-4 redshirt senior guard, played a key role in the second half of last season, starting 11 of the final 12 games and averaging 12.2 points, 34 assists and 14 steals.
Roster Changes and Upcoming Season
There were significant changes to the roster, with five players finding new teams in the transfer portal, including center Cliff Omoruyi (Alabama), guard Derek Simpson (St. Joseph), and guard Gavin Griffin (Nebraska). Pikiell used the portal strategically to acquire guards Tyson Acuff (Eastern Michigan), P.J. Hayes IV (San Diego), Jordan Derkak (Merrimack) and forward Zach Martini (Princeton).
The Scarlet Knights open the season at home against Wagner on Nov. 6. Notably, they will participate in the Thanksgiving Tournament for the first time in the Pikiell regime, with games against Notre Dame and No. 2 Alabama on Nov. 27. The Big Ten schedule features tough competition, including Rutgers taking on No. 14 Purdue, a home game against No. 22 UCLA on Jan. 13, and an away game against No. 17 Indiana on Jan. 2.
Team Expectations and Challenges
Of the 11 players who averaged double-digit points last season, only two, Williams and Davis, return, but the team expects to maximize their potential. With the loss of a key shot blocker in Omoruyi, Rutgers will need to make up for last season’s 93-of-167 blocked shots. Additionally, the Scarlet Knights will look to improve on their averages of 39% from the field and 28.7% from 3-point range.
As Rutgers prepares to unveil its new team, fans are excited to see how this new combination of talent will play out on the court.
