NASCAR Cup Series driver Carson Hocevar and Ryan Blaney engaged in a heated post-race physical altercation on pit road at Bristol Motor Speedway following a chaotic Saturday night finish, according to local reporting from MLive.com. The altercation capped off a dramatic late-race crash that knocked Blaney out of contention and significantly shifted the standings in NASCAR’s playoff format, known as The Chase.

Late-Race Collision Eliminates Blaney at Bristol

The confrontation stemmed from an on-track incident with fewer than 50 laps remaining in the race, when Hocevar and Blaney battled heavily for second place. The two drivers collided on the track, sending Blaney’s car hard into the outside wall and eliminating him from the event, while Hocevar was able to continue driving. “He just kept coming left, never lifted and crashed me,” Blaney told media members after climbing out of his damaged vehicle, as reported by MLive.com. “Something’s going to happen.” Following the crash, Hocevar continued competing and briefly took the lead from Ty Gibbs on a final restart. However, with just seven laps remaining, Gibbs forced Hocevar high up the track, allowing Joey Logano to slip past both drivers and secure the race victory. Hocevar ultimately crossed the finish line in third place, while Blaney was relegated to a 33rd-place finish.

Physical Altercation Erupts on Pit Road

As the race concluded, tensions boiled over on pit road as Blaney approached Hocevar to confront him over the late-race contact. According to MLive.com, Blaney grabbed Hocevar by the collar, prompting the 6-foot-4 Michigan native to respond immediately with a pair of right hooks against the 5-foot-7 Blaney before race officials and crew members separated the drivers. “There wasn’t a whole lot of talking,” Hocevar said in his post-race interview with MLive.com. “He kind of like, said one thing and then went after me. And I wasn’t going to take it.” Hocevar also offered his perspective on the initiation of the fight, telling reporters, “He, looked like, spun himself and then he wants to instigate a fight. So I was going to finish that.”

Playoff Standings Impact After Bristol Show

The chaotic finish and resulting penalties or point distributions carry major implications for the ongoing playoff standings. As a result of the 33rd-place finish, Blaney dropped from fourth down to sixth place in the overall standings. Meanwhile, Hocevar’s third-place finish allowed him to advance one spot into eighth position. Reflecting on the turbulent night and the reaction from spectators, Hocevar noted the intensity of the event to MLive.com, stating, “I don’t think anybody’s left behind me. They got an old-school Bristol show, here.”
