Ryanair Defamation Case Against Ex-Pilot Should Be Joined to Channel 4 Action, High Court Told
Ryanair Seeks to Combine Defamation cases Against Former Pilot and Channel 4
Dublin,Ireland – Ryanair,Europe’s largest budget airline,is seeking to combine two separate defamation lawsuits into a single case. The airline aims to join its ongoing legal battle against former pilot John Goss with its existing case against UK broadcaster Channel 4.
Ryanair filed the initial lawsuit against Channel 4 in 2013 following a Dispatches episode titled “Ryanair: Secrets from the Cockpit.” The program featured anonymous pilots raising concerns about the airline’s fuel policy. Ryanair vehemently denied the allegations, calling them “false and defamatory” and asserting that the program was based on “anonymous hearsay claims.”
The airline maintains that the program damaged its reputation and seeks to have its ”outstanding 29-year safety record” vindicated in court. Channel 4 has stood by its journalism, stating its commitment to the integrity of the Dispatches program.
Adding another layer to the legal battle, Ryanair terminated goss’s employment following the airing of the Dispatches episode. Goss, a veteran pilot with 25 years of experience, contributed to the program.
Ryanair is now pursuing a separate defamation case against Goss. However, during a recent High Court hearing, Goss’s legal team argued that both cases should be heard together. They contend that the issues are interconnected and that a joint trial would be more efficient.
Mr. Justice Alexander Owens, presiding over the case, expressed his inclination to combine the lawsuits. He instructed Goss’s legal team to formally notify both Channel 4 and Ryanair of the proposal.
The case against Channel 4 is scheduled to be heard in the High Court next June and is expected to last three weeks. The potential consolidation of the cases could significantly impact the timeline and scope of the legal proceedings.
