SA Dominate NSW: Sheffield Shield Title Dream Alive for Redbacks | Travis Head Shines

March 8, 2026 David Thompson - Sports Editor Sports

Adelaide, Australia – South Australia have moved to second place in the Sheffield Shield standings after a dominant nine-wicket victory over New South Wales at Karen Rolton Oval. The win keeps the dream of back-to-back titles alive for the Redbacks, fueled by a stellar performance from Nathan McAndrew and a rapid half-century from Travis Head.

McAndrew delivered his best figures of the season, claiming 6-55 as NSW were bowled out for 198 in their second innings. The right-arm quick proved too much for the Blues’ batting lineup, dismantling their order and setting up a straightforward chase for South Australia. He capped off a brilliant display, earning him accolades for his impactful bowling.

The target of 95 proved little challenge for the Redbacks, with Australian star Travis Head leading the charge. Head, in his final appearance for South Australia this season before joining Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League, smashed 58 runs off just 46 balls, including eight boundaries and three sixes. His aggressive innings effectively ended any lingering hopes NSW had of mounting a comeback.

Henry Hunt contributed 29 not out, ensuring a swift victory for the home side. The pair’s 89-run opening stand put the result beyond doubt, with Nathan McSweeney hitting the winning runs to seal the win.

The match saw a frenetic opening session on day three for NSW, starting at 1-0 and trailing by 104 runs. However, they quickly found themselves in trouble, losing five wickets in a dramatic collapse. A dropped catch of Sam Konstas by Alex Carey couldn’t prevent the slide, as Will Salzmann was dismissed for a golden duck, trapped lbw by Jordan Buckingham. Kurtis Patterson, the in-form NSW captain, also fell cheaply to McAndrew, leaving the visitors reeling at 3-15.

A 51-run partnership between Konstas (28) and Lachlan Shaw (64) offered some resistance, but Buckingham broke the stand with another lbw dismissal. McAndrew then took control, dismissing Matthew Gilkes and Josh Philippe in quick succession, the latter thanks to a spectacular catch by Liam Scott at gully.

Resuming after lunch at 6-79, Joel Davies joined Shaw in an attempt to rebuild the innings. Shaw reached his third half-century of the season, but McAndrew eventually claimed his fifth wicket, dismissing Davies. Shaw’s resistance finally ended when he edged McAndrew to Carey, leaving the tailenders to salvage what they could.

Sean Abbott (21) and Charlie Stobo (36) provided some late-order defiance, but Ben Manenti ultimately wrapped up the innings, taking both wickets after the tea break.

South Australia’s victory is particularly significant as it maintains their second-place position in the standings, even if Queensland defeat Western Australia at the Gabba. As of the time of writing, the Bulls were struggling at 6-43 when bad light halted play in Brisbane, making a Queensland win appear unlikely. The Redbacks claimed 2.73 bonus points from the fixture, bridging the 0.95-point gap with Queensland.

This win marks a remarkable turnaround for South Australia, who have been undefeated since October 18th, after losing their first two games of the title defence. They are now eyeing consecutive Sheffield Shield titles for the first time in the competition’s 133-year history.

The current Sheffield Shield standings are as follows:

Team M W L D N/R Ded. Bat Bowl PTS
Victoria 9 7 2 0 0 0 7.68 8.3 57.98
South Australia 9 4 2 3 0 0 6.56 8.6 42.16
Queensland 8 3 3 2 0 0 8.18 6.2 34.38
NSW 9 2 4 3 0 0 6.62 7.9 29.52
Tasmania 9 3 4 2 0 2 3.73 7.5 29.23
Western Australia 8 1 5 2 0 0 1.99 7.2 17.19

South Australia will face a tough challenge in their final round match against top-of-the-table Victoria, as they aim to secure a spot in a second consecutive Sheffield Shield final.
