Floyd Shivambu has been removed from his post as secretary-general of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party in South Africa, just six months after assuming the role. The decision follows Shivambu’s attendance at an Easter service led by controversial Malawian pastor Shepherd Bushiri.
Bushiri, once a prominent preacher in southern Africa, faced fraud charges in South Africa in 2020. After being released on bail, he fled to Malawi, and South Africa has as sought his extradition. Bushiri has denied any wrongdoing.
The MK party, founded by former President Jacob Zuma, announced Shivambu’s dismissal at a Wednesday press conference. The party stated that shivambu’s actions “were found to be against the spirit and prescripts of the MK party’s constitution.”
“The president and national officials were left with no other option but to act swiftly,” said Nathi Nhleko,MK national chair, adding that the trip “was not an officially sanctioned program of the organisation.”
Despite his removal as secretary-general, Shivambu will remain a member of the MK party and will represent the party in the National Assembly. Shivambu stated that he “fully accepts” the party’s decision and looks forward to his new role in parliament.
Shivambu joined the MK party in August of last year, after leaving the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). he was later appointed secretary-general, a top position within the party. Under Zuma’s leadership, the MK party secured third place in last year’s elections, contributing to the ANC’s loss of its majority for the first time since 1994.
Shivambu faced criticism in April after reposting footage of Bushiri welcoming him at his Jesus Nation church. Shivambu also praised Bushiri for his “good work” and “for hosting us.”
Shepherd Bushiri, a millionaire, has established churches across several African nations. He faces accusations of exploiting impoverished individuals by selling items like “miracle oil.” Bushiri claims to have cured HIV, restored sight to the blind, improved the fortunes of the poor, and even walked on air. He also faces rape charges, which he and his wife deny.
What’s next
The MK party will now focus on solidifying its position in the National Assembly, while Shivambu transitions to his new role as a parliamentary representative. The party will likely seek to clarify its internal regulations regarding members’ associations with controversial figures.
