Countering Drone Threats with Autonomous Robotics
Saab is developing Nimbrix, a “fire and forget” robotic system designed to intercept and neutralize unmanned aerial vehicles (uavs). The system, initiated in 2024, offers a cost-effective response to the increasing prevalence of low-cost drone threats, according to a press release from Saab. Nimbrix can autonomously navigate up to five kilometers to its target using an onboard guidance system.
The system’s effectors can either disable individual drones or disrupt swarms by creating an aerial burst, effectively creating a localized countermeasure.Stefan Öberg, head of Saab’s missile Systems buisness unit, stated that Nimbrix is designed to address the escalating challenges posed by readily available, low-cost drone technology.
Versatile Deployment and Future availability
nimbrix is a ground-based system engineered for integration onto various vehicle platforms, allowing for adaptable deployment based on specific customer requirements. Saab is currently engaged in discussions with potential clients and anticipates initial deliveries beginning in 2026.
