Interview with Dr. Kibangkumba: Launch of the SAANS Campaign for Pneumonia Awareness in Mokokchung District
Date: November 18, 2023
Location: Chief Medical Officer’s Conference Hall, Mokokchung District
Interviewer: Thank you, Dr. Kibangkumba, for taking the time to speak with us today. The SAANS campaign was launched to coincide with World Pneumonia Day. Can you tell us why this campaign is so crucial for Mokokchung District?
Dr. Kibangkumba: Thank you for having me. The SAANS campaign is critical because pneumonia continues to be the leading infectious cause of death among children under five years old. Despite being preventable and treatable, many children in our community are still at risk. This campaign aims to raise awareness, promote early detection, and encourage timely intervention.
Interviewer: You mentioned the importance of awareness. How do you plan to educate the community about pneumonia, especially in rural areas?
Dr. Kibangkumba: We believe that churches can be effective platforms to disseminate information. They are central to our communities and serve as trusted spaces for gathering. We plan to work closely with church leaders to hold informational sessions where we can educate parents about pneumonia’s signs and symptoms and the preventive measures they can take.
Interviewer: Dr. Imlisenba also spoke about the SAANS initiative’s objectives. Can you elaborate on these objectives and the strategies in place for prevention and treatment?
Dr. Kibangkumba: Absolutely. The SAANS initiative focuses on increasing community awareness, promoting preventive measures such as vaccinations, and ensuring that children receive timely treatment. We are rolling out a comprehensive communication plan that includes educating parents on recognizing the early signs of pneumonia. This also includes training healthcare workers to improve diagnosis and treatment protocols in our facilities.
Interviewer: Child mortality due to pneumonia is a significant concern. What specific goals does the campaign aim to achieve in this regard?
Dr. Kibangkumba: Our primary goal is to reduce child mortality rates linked to pneumonia significantly. By increasing awareness and improving access to early treatment, we hope to cut the number of critical cases. Importantly, we want every child to be able to access basic healthcare. It requires a community-wide effort, and we believe the SAANS campaign can mobilize that.
Interviewer: How can the community get involved in the SAANS campaign?
Dr. Kibangkumba: Community involvement is key! We encourage parents to attend educational sessions, share information with others, and seek medical attention sooner rather than later if they suspect their child has pneumonia. We are also calling for volunteers who can assist in disseminating information and managing community awareness programs.
Interviewer: Thank you, Dr. Kibangkumba. Your insights on the SAANS campaign highlight how crucial community engagement is in tackling pneumonia. We wish you success in your efforts to protect the children of Mokokchung District.
Dr. Kibangkumba: Thank you! Together, we can make a significant difference in our community’s health, especially for our children.
Dr. Limanaro, the District Program Officer, chaired the event. He stated that the campaign’s main goal is to lower child mortality rates caused by pneumonia through community awareness.
