Updated June 17, 2025
Aryna Sabalenka, the world No. 1, has extended an apology to Coco gauff following her defeat at the French Open final. Sabalenka characterized her post-match remarks as “unprofessional,” acknowledging that emotions influenced her assessment of the match.
Speaking after the Roland Garros final, Sabalenka initially attributed the loss more to her own errors than to Gauff’s performance. Though, she later reflected on her role in the match and the impact of her words.
The Belarusian tennis star, a three-time major champion, had 37 winners but committed 70 unforced errors during the final. Gauff recorded 30 winners and 30 unforced errors.
Sabalenka also lost to Gauff in the 2023 U.S. Open final, despite winning the first set. This history of close matches and emotional outcomes has shaped Sabalenka’s understanding of her role as a competitor.
The apology highlights the importance of sportsmanship and the role of emotions in high-stakes competition.
“That was just completely unprofessional of me,” Sabalenka said. “I let my emotions get the better of me. I absolutely regret what I said back then… I wrote to Coco afterward – not immediately, but recently.”
“I never intended to attack her,” Sabalenka added. “I was super emotional and not vrey smart at that press conference…I’m the one who always treats my opponents with great respect, whether I win or lose.”
What’s next
Sabalenka aims to learn from this experience and maintain respect for her opponents, regardless of the outcome. She hopes to control her emotions better in future matches and finals.
