Final Remembrance Service and Transition of power
Outgoing Irish President Michael D. Higgins and his wife, Sabina Higgins, attended a Remembrance Sunday service at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin on November 10, 2024.This marked one of President Higgins’ final official duties before the inauguration of his successor, Catherine Connolly, scheduled for Tuesday, November 12, 2024.
During the ceremony,President Higgins laid a wreath on behalf of the Irish people,honoring those who died in conflict. He described the prospect to serve as president as a privilege.
Expressions of Gratitude and Respect
Speaking to reporters outside the cathedral, Mrs. Higgins expressed deep gratitude, stating she was “so grateful to the people of Ireland, and to all the goodness of the universe, that we’ve come through it and we’ve done our best and we’re very grateful and we’re full of love for the people.”
Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald was also present at the evensong service.She briefly spoke with President Higgins as he departed in his car.
ms. McDonald told the PA news agency that she thanked President Higgins for his service, calling him ”a hero for all of us” and wishing him well. She described the moment as emotional, acknowledging the end of his presidency and praising both Michael D. and Sabina Higgins as “absolutely powerful.”
Importance of Remembrance and Reconciliation
ms. McDonald emphasized the importance of attending the Remembrance Sunday service, stating, “It’s very important that we remember, also that we respect each other.” She connected this sentiment to the ongoing discussions surrounding irish reunification.
“And in my opinion, as we build towards Irish reunification now in these coming years, it is all the more important that we see each other, hear each other, respect each other and include each other,” she added.
