Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu is set to earn his 50th cap for the DHL Stormers this Saturday when they host the Glasgow Warriors in a crucial United Rugby Championship clash at DHL Stadium in Cape Town.
The flyhalf will reach the milestone in what is shaping up to be a must-win, top-of-the-table encounter with kick-off scheduled for 1:45pm. A victory would see the Stormers seal a quarter-final place and potentially leapfrog their opponents if they claim five points while denying the Warriors any.
Feinberg-Mngomezulu made his debut in a URC quarter-final at DHL Stadium back in 2022 and has since become a regular in the Stormers backline. Speaking ahead of the match, he acknowledged the personal significance of the occasion but stressed that his focus remains firmly on the team’s performance.
“I’m super proud and grateful,” he said. “But right now it’s about preparing as best as possible so that Saturday becomes an occasion. If you lose, it’s not a great memory to attach to your 50th.”
The Stormers head into the round 16 encounter under pressure after a shock home defeat to Connacht, a result Feinberg-Mngomezulu described as a “proper dagger to the heart”. Costly errors and a failure to adapt to conditions proved decisive, prompting what he called “hard and honest conversations” in the squad this week.
He admitted the loss was on the players, stating they didn’t adapt fast enough and made crucial errors at key moments. Now it’s about tidying up those mistakes and coping better under pressure ahead of the Glasgow challenge.
Glasgow are currently top of the URC standings but are coming off a heavy defeat by the Lions at Ellis Park. The Stormers sit in second on the table, four points adrift of the Scots, and know they likely need to win their final three league phase fixtures to top the table and secure home advantage for the playoffs, starting with this weekend’s match.
In preparation for the clash, the Stormers have made several notable changes to their lineup. Damian Willemse returns at fullback after being rested, while Wandisile Simelane slots in on the right wing. Young centre Markus Muller is poised to make his debut off the bench, which would make him one of the youngest players ever to represent the Stormers and see him join Willemse as one of the few to earn a cap before turning 19.
Up front, several changes see fetcher Paul de Villiers, lock Ruben van Heerden, tighthead prop Neethling Fouché and hooker André-Hugo Venter all promoted to the starting pack. Replacement hooker JJ Kotzé and loose forward Keke Morabe are named on the bench, alongside loosehead Oli Kebble, tighthead Zach Porthen, loose forward Marcel Theunissen, scrumhalf Imad Khan, flyhalf Jurie Matthee and Muller.
John Dobson, director of rugby, said the final home match of the round-robin stage will be a big one for his team in the context of their season as they aim to secure a favourable position heading into the play-offs.
