Sacramento state Hornets Join Big West: What Role Will They Play?

Sacramento State is set to become a full member of the Big West Conference, beginning in the 2026-27 academic year. The university informed the Big Sky Conference of its departure Wednesday, paving the way for the Hornets to become the 12th member of the Big West.
Dan Butterly, commissioner of the Big West, expressed enthusiasm about Sacramento State’s addition. he cited the university’s commitment to academic and athletic excellence, as well as community service, as key factors. Butterly anticipates increased competition and spirited rivalries within the conference.
However, the Big west does not sponsor football. Sacramento State’s football program is pursuing independent status at the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level. The NCAA Division I Council is expected to rule on the matter next week.
The FBS Oversight Committee previously recommended against the move, emphasizing the importance of an invitation to join an FBS conference. While the NCAA granted a waiver to Liberty in 2017 to become an FBS independent, the committee believes circumstances have since changed.
