Saeki Selva Targets Vietnam with 100-Store Expansion Plan
Japanese supermarket operator Saeki Selva Holdings is preparing to enter Vietnam with a long-term goal of opening 100 stores, according to company disclosures.
The expansion represents the latest move by a Japanese retail operator targeting Southeast Asia’s expanding consumer markets. Vietnam’s retail sector has seen steady expansion, underpinned by gross domestic product growth hovering around 7% in recent years alongside a young demographic driving demand for modern grocery formats, according to verified reporting.
Building a Local Leadership Pipeline
Saeki Selva Holdings operates roughly 200 supermarkets across Japan under the Saeki brand name. To establish its footing in foreign territory, the company has begun training workers in both Japan and Vietnam. The curriculum spans food preparation, inventory management, customer service, and store leadership, with the explicit aim of running entire stores under local management.
Replicating the Japanese Operational Model
This workforce preparation serves as a core differentiator for the brand. By grooming Vietnamese staff inside Japanese locations, corporate leadership hopes to successfully replicate its operational model while remaining adaptable to local consumer preferences. The company has not yet disclosed a specific timeline for opening its first storefront or the total capital expenditure required for the 100-store rollout.
Navigating a Crowded Retail Market
Saeki enters a crowded and competitive Vietnamese retail market as consumers increasingly tighten household budgets despite broader macroeconomic growth. The Japanese firm will contend with established domestic supermarket chains alongside major international rivals.
Other Japanese retail players have established a firm presence in the country. Rival operator Aeon has pursued an aggressive expansion strategy targeting 30 shopping malls across Vietnam. Meanwhile, convenience store chain FamilyMart opened its first Hanoi location as part of a renewed push into the country, and various Japanese thrift store operators have established dozens of outlets throughout Southeast Asia.
Financial Footing and Growth Targets
Reaching the 100-store milestone would position Saeki among the larger Japanese grocery operators competing in the Vietnamese retail sector. In its most recent fiscal year, Saeki Selva Holdings reported total revenue of ¥120 billion, translating to approximately $810 million, according to financial figures cited in the coverage.
