Safe Online Experience for US Kids & Teens
Google Enhances Online Safety with Age Assurance Rollout in the U.S.
Google is taking a significant step forward in its commitment to online safety for young users by beginning a phased rollout of age assurance measures in the U.S. This initiative aims to provide more age-appropriate experiences across Google products for individuals under 18.
The new measures, already successfully implemented in select international markets, are designed to identify users who are either over or under the age of 18. This distinction will allow Google to tailor experiences, ensuring that younger users benefit from enhanced protections.
“This is just one part of our broader commitment to online safety for young users and families,” a Google spokesperson stated. “we’ve continually invested in technology, policies and literacy resources to better protect kids and teens across our platforms.”
Google’s thorough approach to child online safety includes automatic safeguards for users under 18, default settings and protections, expanded parental controls through Family Link, and the creation of dedicated, age-appropriate experiences like YouTube Kids.
Age-appropriate protections for U.S. Users Under 18
For users identified as being under 18, Google will automatically implement existing enhanced protections. These include:
YouTube Digital Wellbeing Tools: Features such as reminders to take breaks and go to bed will be enabled.Safeguards will also be added to content recommendations, including limiting repetitive views of certain types of content.
Maps Timeline Disabled: The Timeline feature in Google Maps will be turned off for users under 18.
Personalized Advertising Disabled: Personalized advertising will be disabled, and age-sensitive ad categories will be restricted.
Google Play Restrictions: Users recognized as minors will be prevented from accessing apps restricted to adults on Google Play.
How Age Assurance Works
When Google’s tools estimate that a user might be younger than 18,they will receive notifications via email and within Google products. These notifications will detail how their settings have changed and provide guidance for adults on how to verify age to manage these settings.
Google’s age assurance strategy combines age estimation and, when necessary, age verification.
Age Estimation: This process utilizes machine learning to interpret various signals associated with a user’s account. These signals, such as search history or YouTube viewing categories, help determine if a user is likely under or over 18.
Age Verification: If an age estimation is believed to be incorrect, users will have the option to correct their age. This can be done by uploading a photo of a government-issued ID or a selfie.
A Collaborative Effort for Online Safety
Google views age assurance technology as a crucial development in creating a safer online habitat. The company notes the increasing adoption of such technologies by othre companies.google emphasizes that its approach is designed with user privacy in mind, avoiding the collection of additional data or the sharing of granular user details with all apps and websites.
“We believe that a truly safer online environment requires input and investment from players across the entire ecosystem,” the spokesperson added. “We are committed to taking this important step to help ensure children have age-appropriate, privacy-preserving experiences across our platforms.”
