The Unexpected Revival of a Horror Franchise
Despite initial statements indicating closure, the future of “The Conjuring Universe” appears brighter than ever. “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” initially presented as the final chapter featuring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, has spurred producers to reconsider expanding the franchise.
The film’s impressive box office performance – earning $494 million against a $55 million budget – has demonstrably shifted perspectives within New Line Cinema, suggesting continued audience investment in the series. This success challenges the earlier narrative of a definitive ending.
A Universe of Spinoffs and Expanding Lore
“The Conjuring Universe” has already spawned a considerable number of spin-offs. These include the three “Annabelle” films (2014, 2017, 2019), the two “The Nun” films (2018, 2023), and the four core “The Conjuring” films (2013, 2016, 2021, 2023). Additionally, 2019’s “The Curse of La Llorona,” while not officially branded as such, is widely considered to exist within the same cinematic universe.
Safran’s Statements: Fuel Left in the Tank
Franchise producer Peter Safran, in an interview with entertainment Weekly, indicated that “Last Rites” proved there’s “a lot of fuel left in the tank.” He clarified that the film concluded the story arc for Wilson and Farmiga’s portrayal of the Warrens, but emphasized the vast untapped potential within the broader universe.
“I think that Last Rites shows that there is a lot of fuel left in the tank. It was the end of that particular version of the story with Patrick and Vera and that version of The conjuring. There’s so much more to it that we haven’t dug into.
I think there’s really exciting ways to go with both film and television, frankly. It would be incredibly satisfying. People have been on this journey with us for a dozen years now. I think they want more.
The introduction, in a real way, of Judy and Tony, I think, people love. The feedback we got was they love those characters. So I think that there’ll be more to come.”
Safran specifically highlighted the positive reception to the characters of Judy and Tony, suggesting their potential for future storylines. While no specific spin-off projects were confirmed, he did mention the development of a television series for HBO Max.
What’s Next for The Conjuring Universe?
The success of ”Last rites” has opened the door for a variety of possibilities.A television series on HBO Max is already in the works, offering a longer-form narrative to explore the universe’s lore.
