SailGP Races Into New York: A Fast-growing Spectacle
Updated June 05, 2025
The high-speed world of SailGP descends upon New York City, showcasing cutting-edge sailboat racing. Unlike
Formula 1, which has been rumored for years, or IndyCar and NASCAR, SailGP offers a unique spectacle, marked
by its rapid growth and recent partnerships, including one with Amazon, now the Official Retail Partner of the
United States SailGP team. Mike Buckley,CEO and co-owner of the US SailGP team, discussed the series’ appeal
and future.
Buckley explained that SailGP, founded by Larry Ellison and Russell Coutts, features 12 national teams racing
high-speed catamarans in 14 events worldwide. These boats, powered by the wind, can exceed 60 mph. A key
aspect of SailGP is bringing sailboat racing closer to fans by hosting races near iconic city locations. In New
York, the race will occur near the financial district, Governor’s island, and the Statue of Liberty.
According to Buckley, SailGP aims to make sailing accessible to a broader audience. with wings almost 100 feet
tall, the catamarans offer an remarkable visual experience. Buckley, a lifelong sailor, sees his current
role as an evolution in his career. He joined the US team in November 2023, partnering with Ryan mckillen, an
early Uber employee. Buckley balances his roles as co-owner, CEO, and strategist on the boat.
Buckley acknowledges that his time racing is finite, but his involvement in ownership and management allows
him to stay competitive. He enjoys the challenges of growing the business and fan base. He said that building a
strong television product is crucial for the series’ growth. SailGP uses high-quality graphics and commentary
to make the sport understandable to the average racing fan, similar to the yellow frist down line used in NFL
broadcasts.
The series’ appeal also lies in its locations. Buckley noted that SailGP races take place in major cities like
New York, Saint-Tropez, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sydney, and Auckland, making it easy for fans to attend. The
television viewership has grown, with CBS averaging over 800,000 viewers per race. Buckley pointed out that
this compares favorably to the NHL, and positions SailGP competitively alongside Formula One and Major League
Baseball.
While some compare SailGP to “F1 on the water,” Buckley believes SailGP stands on its own.He acknowledged
that the comparison is flattering, especially given F1’s recent success. He mentioned that F1 team principals
and CEO Stefano Domenicali have praised SailGP’s growth. Buckley sees this recognition, along with investments
from prominent figures,as a measure of SailGP’s success.
What’s next
As SailGP continues its season, the focus remains on expanding its audience and solidifying its position as a
premier racing league. The New York Sail Grand Prix is a key opportunity to showcase the sport’s excitement and
accessibility to a global audience.
