A major academic symposium will be held at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome on October 31, 2025, the eve of Pope Leo XIV’s formal proclamation of Saint John Henry Newman as a Doctor of the church. This honor, bestowed upon one of the 19th century’s most influential Christian thinkers, was announced in July following confirmation by the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints.
Symposium Details and Collaboration
The symposium, titled “Saint John Henry Newman. doctor of the Global Church: His relevance today,” is organized by the International Centre of Friends of Newman in collaboration with the Faculty of Theology of the Pontifical Gregorian University, the Nicola Center of the University of Notre Dame, and the National Institute of Newman Studies (USA). The event will feature presentations from leading Newman scholars from around the globe.
Conference Schedule and Key Themes
The day-long conference, running from 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., will be conducted in both English and Italian, with simultaneous translation provided. Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, is scheduled to participate. Over twenty speakers will address Newman’s work through the lens of contemporary issues, including doctrinal growth, ecclesiology, synodality, ecumenism, interreligious dialogue, education, preaching, and new evangelization efforts.
