Saks Fifth Avenue Cancels Holiday Light Show: A Missed Opportunity for 100th Anniversary

Saks Fifth Avenue Cancels Holiday Light Show: A Missed Opportunity for 100th Anniversary

November 19, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Business

Light Show: The End of a NYC Tradition”>Saks Fifth Avenue Light Show Cancelled for 2024

Saks Fifth Avenue has decided to cancel its popular holiday light show for 2024, opting instead for more subtle lighting to frame its building. This decision is surprising, especially since 2024 will mark the 100th anniversary of Saks and the 200th anniversary of New York City’s Fifth Avenue.

Saks has a long tradition of dazzling New Yorkers with its light show above the holiday window displays. A spokesperson stated the current lighting choice aims to honor the building’s architectural significance. However, critics see this as a missed opportunity for grand celebrations during a significant milestone year.

While Saks reduces its festive display, competitors along Fifth Avenue and 57th Street are preparing to shine brighter. The Fifth Avenue Association plans to feature a giant 30-foot snowflake that lights up Fifth Avenue and 57th Street, drawing attention from visitors. Madelyn Wils, interim president of the Fifth Avenue Association, promises an outstanding holiday celebration. She highlighted that many stores are enhancing their holiday offerings this year.

The decision to cancel the light show has received backlash in the media and social platforms. Commentators express disappointment at Saks, stating that eliminating a beloved holiday tradition does not reflect well on such a prestigious retailer. CEO Marc Metrick acknowledged the company would take a step back to assess its holiday display strategy, citing the need for careful investment.

Many view this cancellation as a cost-cutting measure. Reports have surfaced indicating HBC, Saks’ parent company, is delaying payments owed to vendors while making significant acquisitions, such as Neiman Marcus Group. This raises questions about financial priorities.

Despite Saks’ reduced display, the holiday celebrations will still be vibrant along Fifth Avenue. The season’s festivities will kick off on December 8, celebrating 200 years of Fifth Avenue. The event will close traffic on parts of Fifth Avenue, allowing pedestrians to enjoy live music, art installations, and exclusive shopping experiences.

Shops and restaurants along the avenue will participate in the festivities, and holiday decorations will adorn the streets, inviting visitors to celebrate the season. The Fifth Avenue Association also plans a full year of events to commemorate its anniversary, including historical tours next year.

In summary, while Saks Fifth Avenue steps back from its light show, the overall holiday spirit on Fifth Avenue and 57th Street remains bright and engaging, promising a memorable experience for guests.
