Salem MA Snow Updates: Plowing, Parking & Service Delays

Salem Crews Continue Snow Removal, Parking Restrictions Remain

Salem, MA – Despite the official end of the snow emergency parking ban on Tuesday, February 24th at 6:00 PM, residents are still navigating lingering parking restrictions as the city’s Department of Public Services (DPS) continues large-scale snow removal efforts. Crews worked overnight Tuesday on Washington Street, New Derby Street, Derby Street, and Essex Street, and are scheduled to continue overnight work on St. Peter Street, Brown Street, Church Street, Hawthorne Boulevard, New Liberty Street, Front Street, Charter Street, Central Street, and portions of Essex Street and Lafayette Street.

The DPS is urging patience as these operations continue into the near future. Regular plowing operations are also ongoing throughout the day, focused on scraping roadways and widening them where possible. Residents can report roadways in need of attention by emailing snow@salem.com.

A current list of streets with temporary parking restrictions is available at www.salemma.gov, and the Salem Police Department is updating the list as conditions change. The city emphasizes the importance of leaving sufficient space for emergency vehicles to pass, warning that obstructing access may result in towing.

For those living on streets with parking restrictions, the city is offering alternative parking options. Residents may park on nearby streets without restrictions, or utilize either the Universal Steel lot (297 Bridge Street) or the Church Street lot (72 Church Street) free of charge.

Service Disruptions and Reminders

Several city services have been impacted by the storm. The scheduled cardboard drop-off at the Salem Transfer Station for tomorrow has been cancelled; residents are asked to hold onto their cardboard until the next scheduled drop-off on March 12th.

Waste Management is operating with a one-day delay for curbside trash and recycling pickup this week. Residents are advised to place their bins as close to the curb as possible on the day *after* their normal pickup day. Missed pickups can be reported by calling 866-436-3885. Black Earth curbside compost pickups, however, are continuing on their regular schedule.

The Leslie’s Retreat Memorial Dedication, originally scheduled for February 26th at the corner of Lynde Street and North Street, has been postponed due to the extreme snowfall. A new date will be announced as soon as it is determined.

The city is also reminding property owners of their responsibility to clear snow from adjacent sidewalks and crosswalk ramps. Inspectors are actively enforcing this ordinance, and failure to comply may result in a fine. Clearing sidewalks is crucial for pedestrian safety, particularly for school children.

“We very much appreciate your patience and cooperation as we all recover from this challenging storm!” a city statement reads. The ongoing efforts reflect Salem’s commitment to balancing resident needs with public safety during and after significant winter weather events.
