Salem Planning Board Approves Casino Project at Rockingham Park Mall
Salem, N.H. Approves Casino Plans
The Salem Planning Board approved plans for a large casino at The Mall of Rockingham Park. The vote was 5-2, even after concerns were raised about the project’s impact on the neighborhood.
Attorney Amy Manzelli, representing nearby residents Jamie and Chris Cummings, argued the application lacked information on public health, safety, and neighborhood welfare. She highlighted potential issues, including increased traffic and changes in lighting.
Manzelli also mentioned a former deed restriction against gaming facilities, which attorney John Sokul stated is no longer applicable. She requested that the board delay approval until experts could review the application thoroughly.
Police Chief Joel Dolan assured the board that any public safety costs from the casino would not burden taxpayers. He stated the police were prepared to handle any issues that arise due to the new development.
Planning Director Jacob LaFontaine and other board members expressed satisfaction with the traffic study included in the application. Local residents mostly supported the casino, emphasizing its potential benefits for the town.
Town Council Chair Joe Sweeney noted the town had previously voted in favor of such a facility. He called it an exciting opportunity.
Although some board members recognized the Cummings’ concerns and suggested delays for further review, others emphasized the casino’s economic potential. The final motion passed, with board members Carlson and Lewis voting against it.
The planned Live! Casino will cost $160 million and will include over 900 historic racing machines, more than 40 gaming tables, a movie theater, event spaces, a sports lounge, and a golf simulator. The developers aim to begin demolition of the vacant building in early 2024, with the possibility of future expansion into a hotel, pending agreement from the town and mall owner.
